📍Daniel's Donuts, Melbourne
I just arrived in Melbourne. I had all my luggage, which was an Osprey Travel Backpack. I was stepping into the Southern Cross station in Melbourne after taking the bus from the airport. The bus deposits you in a dimly lit parking garage, a sharp contrast, from the bright summer sun outside.
As I walked up the ramp I saw a brighter inside behind the window coverings. Directly inside I was greeted with a wall of terminals to buy airport bus tickets and to my right donuts from Daniel's Donuts. There was one counter with one attendant and a couple of tables.
To set the right context, my flight landed at around 10:30 am. Between immigration, exiting the airport, and taking the bus into Melbourne CBD it was past noon. In other words, it was possibly 19-20 hours since my last bite of non-airplane food. I had Daniel's Donuts saved as a place I wanted to visit while in Melbourne, admittedly not the transit location. Yet, here I was.
I ordered the New Zealand Cream and Jam donut. They had a few different half-split donuts filled with creams and flavors. The donut was cold, likely because it needed to be stored in a refrigerated case. The cream was smooth yet dense with a bit of sweetness through it. I'm sure there is sugar but the sweetness as a flavor came from vanilla. The raspberry jam was fresh without being rustic. The temperature, texture, and flavors reminded me of the Italian Bombolinis in Brooklyn.
I'm skeptical that ordering a "New Zealand" style donut was the best thing to do since it's my first time in Australia. However, now that I've had my first "Australian" bite, I can check into my accommodations. More importantly, figure out where to get coffee and brunch.
If you enjoy reading these as much as I enjoy sharing them, please consider buying me a coffee. I might just write about it. ☕ Buy me a coffee.
