📍Little Egg, New York City
Some places have such interesting menu items that I plan to eat there. Little Egg feels like a walk from every nearby subway stop and the cold weather this day did not help. I'm unsure if they take reservations but we did not have them.
I met a friend there and she got there well before I did. They thankfully let her sit while I was still a while away. The outdoor area is covered and they have heaters. Still, it was quite cold on this February day. Despite the weather, the back patio area was still full. They had 7 or 8 tables back there, mostly for groups of 4 or less. One larger table in the corner could fit more people. They also had seating inside.
I came here because they make an Egg Katsu Sandwich. It's essentially a steamed egg that was cut and fried like a Katsu. Despite the frying, the egg was piping hot, delicate, and fluffy. Pieces of the egg broke apart while I was eating. The coating was pretty light around it but it gave a nice crunch for texture. I could have easily mistaken it for a fish sandwich from the texture alone.
The brioche bun was toasted. It had the right amount of squish for this type of sandwich. It came with some greens that I didn't feel added much to the overall sandwich. It also had a yuzu aioli with expectedly strong citrus notes. I loved how this cut through some of the fat from the katsu. Cheese and bacon were options. I skipped the cheese and ordered bacon. Given how crunchy the sandwich was, I could have skipped the bacon too.
They make their own hot sauce. This one is labeled "Some like it hot" so I think they make more than one. If a place makes its own hot sauce, the odds are I'm going to try it. This had a habanero-like sweetness on the backend. It worked well with the aioli and gave me a bit of the punchiness I wanted.
The hash brown was the one made with shredded potato. This was pressed together with some onions into a puck and fried. It was crispy and golden. The ideal hash brown. Still, I wanted some more balance on the plate. The Katsu Egg is fried and the hash brown is fried.
We ordered a coffee cake also. The penalty for being so late was I didn't get to take a picture. If you get a chance to try it, you might notice a little cardamom mixed in with the classic cinnamon.
On our way out we decided we wanted a cup of coffee. Ultimately, we wandered around and went to Burly Coffee.
If you enjoy reading these as much as I enjoy sharing them, please consider buying me a coffee. I might just write about it. ☕ Buy me a coffee.
