📍Rollin Bagels, New York City
A few months ago, Rollin Bagels, a food cart started popping up in Long Island City. First near the waterfront and later towards Court Square, depending on the day of the week. Like pizza, bagels are a quintessential New York food. If you haven't had a New York bagel in New York, you're missing out.
I get weekly cravings for bagels. Sometimes as a BEC (Bacon, Egg, and Cheese), sometimes with smoked salmon, and a million other ways. How you order one says a lot about you. A couple days ago, I wanted a bagel and went to Rollin Bagels. It was a convenient choice on a cold, windy day. A choice I've already made a couple of times before.
The bagel is covered with all the classic "everything" spices like garlic, poppy seed, and sesame seed. Outside of New York, you'll sometimes find bagels that are only partially covered, but not here. The outside of the bagel has a well-formed crust that doesn't crackle or fray apart when pressured. In the case of this sandwich I got it lightly toasted. The interior is light with respectable chew.
It's important for a bagel being used as a sandwich not to be too dense otherwise the ingredients slip out. If the bagel is too soft, it's just a bun with a hole in it. This one finds a good balance to get that signature NY bagel texture. I asked for a couple of scrambled eggs, American cheese, and bacon to bring together the classic BEC. Finish it with salt, pepper, and hot sauce.
They use a sriracha style hot sauce still my craving is satisfied, until next week.
