📍Tylixto Greek Wrap, Athens
On my first night in Athens, I was heading to a loukoumades place that was somewhat on the way back to my hotel. I stumbled upon this place next door. I wanted Greek donuts, and the line there was long. This line was just a bit shorter, so I figured, why not? I had not tried a gyro in Athens yet. I'm confident this is a place meant for tourists, or at least a place locals don't visit. Everyone spoke English, it had over 2,000 reviews on Google, and the loukoumades place I was planning to visit was 100% meant for tourists. I don't think this is a bad thing, just something to be aware of. Despite orienting towards non-locals, the food can be just as authentic and flavorful, albeit usually at a slightly higher price point. This block is full of takeout-style food places, and thus lines to order were snaking from each place. Some places, including this one, had a little seating area out front. I got in line with maybe about 15 people ahead of me. When I got to the front, I ordered, and I waited to the side with everyone else. I got my gyro about 7-8 minutes later. The whole process took maybe 15 minutes.
I ordered the pork gyro. I would consider it snack-sized, which was what I wanted. The pork gyro meat with fries, tzatziki, onions, and tomatoes were in a warm and soft pita bread. The pork was crisped up on one side and tender on the other. The fries were hot and a little fluffy. The cold onion provided some crunch. The tzatziki was liberally applied, giving the wrap a good fat layer and some freshness. It's an after-the-bar snack or, like me, a pre-donut snack. After this handheld little treat, I noticed the line for the loukoumades had gone down. I jumped in that line, and my night wasn't over.
